The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has suspended the planned 15% increase in transport fares that was scheduled to take effect on Monday, July 22, 2024.

The fare hike was initially proposed due to rising costs of fuel and other essentials, such as spare parts for the transport business.

However, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) advised commuters to disregard the announcement.

In an interview with Citi Business News, David Agboado, Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association, explained that the timing of the fare increase would further burden the public, leading to the decision to suspend it.

“We, the transport operators, have discussed and agreed that while fuel, spare parts, and other costs have risen, this is not the right time to increase transport fares. Therefore, we have decided to suspend the fare hike,” Agboado stated.

He emphasized that transport fares would not increase as the operators had reached a mutual understanding. “Transport fares will not be going up because we, the transporters, have understood each other,” he added.

Agboado also advised commercial drivers to maintain the current fare rates until a more suitable time for an increase is decided.

“My message to fellow drivers is to exercise patience. We have been appointed to make these decisions in their best interest, and this suspension is also in their best interest. They should not be angry. The right time for an increase will come,” he stated.
