Electoral Commission officials in the Ashanti Region have begun the process of removing around 580 names from the Manhyia South Voter Register following a court ruling.

This action stems from a petition filed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency, which highlighted irregularities in the voter register during the voter transfer exercise. The party sought legal clarification regarding these issues.

On Tuesday, Kumasi Magistrate Court, under the leadership of Her Worship Deborah Gyaawa Donkor, ruled in favor of the NPP and directed the Electoral Commission to revert the affected voters to their original constituencies.

In an interview with Citi News, Alhaji Haruna Alhassan, the NPP Secretary for Manhyia South, stressed that the party would closely monitor the situation to ensure appropriate actions are taken.

“During the transfer process, we in the NPP for Manhyia South became aware of certain irregularities related to the transfer of votes into the constituency.

We noticed that the transfers were unusual, but due to the legal framework, there was little we could do at that time.

During the exhibition, we followed up and discovered that about five or six polling stations out of the 107 in Manhyia South had abnormal transfers.”

“For instance, we noted approximately 150 transfers to St. Louis Training College of Education. We took the matter to court and appeared before the court five times.

Ultimately, the court ordered that the 580 individuals transferred to Manhyia South during this period should be sent back to their original voting locations. We will ensure that this directive is implemented,” he said.

He also urged other NPP stronghold constituencies to conduct thorough checks to identify any potential anomalies and seek appropriate remedies.
