The Accra Circuit Court has denied bail to Wontumi TV presenter Akyenkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, who is facing allegations of making unsubstantiated on-air claims linking former President John Mahama to the recent military helicopter crash that killed eight people.
Kofi Asare was arrested on Tuesday, August 12, after the broadcast in question. According to police, his remarks contained unfounded allegations regarding the August 6 crash in the Adansi Akrofoum District of the Ashanti Region, a tragedy that has plunged the nation into mourning. A state funeral for the victims is set for Friday, August 15.

In Thursday’s hearing, the presiding judge rejected the defence’s bail request and ordered that the accused remain in police custody as investigations continue.
Defence counsel Enoch Anhwere Afoakwah, speaking to Citi News after the ruling, condemned the decision as a miscarriage of justice and announced plans to appeal the case at the High Court.
