The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has announced the immediate lifting of curfews in Chereponi and Bunkpurugu, following a recommendation from the North East Regional Security Council.

In a statement released on Friday, February 21, the Interior Minister explained that the decision was made in recognition of the local Chiefs and residents’ genuine commitment to maintaining peace, coupled with significant improvements in the region’s security situation.

The government expressed its gratitude to the Chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and the entire community for their collective efforts in promoting harmony and encouraged them to continue resolving conflicts through peaceful means.

Curfews had previously been imposed and extended in these areas due to security concerns. For example, on January 29, 2025, a curfew in Chereponi was renewed from 10:00 pm to 4:00 am.

Similarly, Bunkpurugu experienced curfew renewals, with the most recent being on November 12, 2024, setting the hours from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am.

The lifting of these curfews signifies a positive development in the region’s stability and the collective resolve of its inhabitants to uphold peace.
