Madam Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West, has reaffirmed her dedication to her constituents, pledging that their well-being and the development of Agona West remain her top priorities.

Despite running as an independent candidate, Madam Morrison emphasized that her decision is driven by a desire to continue representing and advocating for her community.

This move follows her unsuccessful bid to secure the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary nomination for Agona West for the third consecutive term ahead of the 2025 parliamentary session.

A former Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Morrison was one of the 40 women re-elected to parliament in 2020 and one of 11 female MPs who lost in recent party primaries, losing the chance to represent the NPP in the upcoming election.

First elected as MP in 2016 with 58.3% of the vote, she retained her seat in 2020 with 30,132 votes.

Agona West has been a stronghold for the NPP since 2000, with only two wins for the opposition NDC in 1996 and 2012.

Throughout her eight years as an MP and Minister, Morrison has been a prominent advocate for gender equality, child protection, and social welfare, spearheading significant policy initiatives in these areas.

Encouraged by her constituents, Morrison is counting on their support in the December 7 election, where she faces the test of winning without NPP’s official backing.

Political observers believe the upcoming vote will reveal if her influence can carry her independently of her former party.
