The Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana (PHFAoG) has announced the immediate suspension of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) services at all its member facilities due to the non-payment of outstanding claims by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

In a statement signed by its President, Dr. Kwame Buabeng-Frimpong, and issued on Friday, April 4, the Association disclosed that the NHIA has failed to reimburse service providers for claims dating back to September and October 2024, despite several engagements and assurances.

“Despite numerous appeals and consistent engagements with the NHIA—accompanied by repeated promises and timelines—our member facilities are yet to receive reimbursement for services rendered months ago,” the statement read.

The Association stressed that the prolonged delay has placed a significant financial burden on private health providers, severely undermining their ability to deliver quality healthcare to NHIS beneficiaries.

PHFAoG further expressed its disappointment in the NHIA’s inability to honor a recent commitment to settle outstanding claims by the end of March, as stated in the Authority’s press release dated March 25, 2025.

According to the Association, many suppliers and creditors had been given assurances based on this commitment, which, regrettably, was not fulfilled.

While the association acknowledged the inconvenience this decision may cause NHIS cardholders, it stressed that the suspension was necessary to sustain operations.

NHIS clients are advised to carry enough money to pay for their medication and other services until claims are paid.

The association is urging the NHIA to take immediate steps to clear the arrears and ensure prompt payments going forward.
