An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced dispatch rider Lord Mensah to ten years in prison for aiding and abetting a robbery in La, Accra.

Mensah was found guilty of abetment of robbery at the end of his trial.

The court, led by Mr. Isaac Addo, determined that the prosecution, represented by Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, had established Mensah’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt through the testimony of two witnesses.

Mensah’s accomplices—Nana, Black, Emma, and Malouda—remain at large.

During the sentencing, Mensah pleaded for leniency, requesting the court to allow him to return home to care for his baby, wife, and family.

Despite this, the judge imposed a ten-year sentence, taking into account Mensah’s status as a first-time offender, his age, and his plea for mitigation.

Chief Inspector Lawer outlined that the complainant, Rita Ruth Effie Arthur, a student at South La Estates, was targeted by Mensah and his accomplices.

On November 7, 2023, Mensah picked up Nana and Black as pillion riders on his motorcycle, while Emmanuel collected Malouda on another bike.

They proceeded from Agbogbloshie to a cosmetic shop in Sergeant Adjetey, La.

When Arthur arrived at the shop holding her phone, Mensah, with Nana and Black, positioned themselves nearby.

Nana and Black, armed with a jackknife, threatened Arthur and demanded her belongings.

She surrendered her iPhone 6s and iPhone 5, valued at GH¢2,100.

The two robbers then fled with the phones, and Mensah, who was driving the getaway motorcycle, was eventually involved in an accident and sustained injuries.

The prosecution reported that Mensah had previously approached a motorbike mechanic to borrow a motorcycle, which he later used in the robbery, altering its registration plate to evade detection.

After his arrest, Mensah provided the identities of his accomplices and cooperated with the police, helping them recover the stolen mobile phones.
