In a historic medical breakthrough, kidney specialists and surgeons in the Ashanti Region have successfully conducted the first-ever kidney transplant, bringing new hope to patients suffering from kidney disease.

The pioneering surgery took place at the Kidney Specialist Center in partnership with the HopeXchange Medical Centre in Kumasi. The procedure saved the life of a man in his mid-forties who had been battling kidney disease for five years.

After undergoing dialysis for about a year, the patient chose to undergo a transplant following consultations with medical experts.

Dr. Elliot Koranteng Tannor, a consultant nephrologist and the lead specialist for the surgery, shared that the procedure cost approximately $25,000, with future transplants expected to range between $30,000 and $35,000.

Dr. Tannor urged kidney patients to remain hopeful, assuring them that he and his team are dedicated to performing more transplants to improve lives.

“This is something we are hoping will continue, and it is something that has come to stay here in Kumasi,” he stated.

This milestone represents a significant step toward enhancing kidney care in Ghana, reducing dependency on dialysis, and making life-saving treatments more accessible.
