A former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has urged the Majority Caucus in Parliament to act cautiously as it pushes for the abolition of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
This comes after the Majority in Parliament, led by its leader, Mahama Ayariga, started pushing for the OSP to be scrapped and allow the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice to take full responsibility for prosecuting corruption and corruption-related offences.
Mr. Ayariga, speaking in Parliament on Thursday, December 4, questioned the effectiveness of the OSP, despite what he described as greater budgetary support than the Attorney-General’s Department.
According to him, the office has failed to deliver on its mandate and should therefore be dissolved, whether through a private member’s bill or an executive-sponsored amendment.
Alhaji Inusah Fuseini said he disagrees with the Majority’s position.
He argued that Ghana has not yet succeeded in the fight against corruption, making it premature to scrap an institution specifically set up to tackle the problem.
He insisted that the OSP needs more time and support to demonstrate results.
“Nothing has convinced me that we need to cancel the anti-corruption agency, and it is because we have not succeeded in fighting corruption. Have we? If we had succeeded, the office would have been redundant.
“But we have not succeeded, and we are still going after people alleged to be involved in corrupt acts. So nothing has changed, and the OSP is trying his best,” he said.
