Dormaahene and President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Osagyefo Dr. Fredua Agyemang Badu II, has taken a swipe—albeit humourously—at Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over his dramatic protest at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra.

Speaking on the sit-in staged by Minority MPs to demand the release of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Dormaahene said he was not pleased with Afenyo-Markin’s conduct during the demonstration.

“I’m not saying Ghanaians should not support him, but Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin going to EOCO and sitting on the floor—I wasn’t happy with it. He is [an] honourable. He should let me know when he wants to go to such a place so I can send one of my people to follow him with a seat,” the Dormaahene said with a touch of sarcasm.

The Dormaahene made it clear that while he holds personal admiration for Chairman Wontumi, his support does not extend to bypassing legal processes.

“Chairman Wontumi—I really like him, but even though I like him, I am not saying due process shouldn’t work. If I have done something wrong, the law allows me to be investigated.”

The chief’s comments follow the Minority Caucus’s high-profile sit-in protest on Thursday, May 29, in front of EOCO headquarters. The MPs marched from Parliament to the EOCO offices, blocking traffic and drawing a strong police presence, as they decried what they described as the political persecution of Wontumi and the weaponisation of state institutions.

Chairman Wontumi had been arrested on May 27 in connection with alleged financial irregularities involving the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM BANK). Though EOCO granted him bail, the conditions—including GH₵50 million with two sureties to be justified—had not yet been met at the time of the protest.
