Dr. Arthur Kennedy, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has shared his insights on the party’s chances in the upcoming 2024 election.
In an interview on GHOne TV on July 5, 2024, he downplayed the significance of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s (NAPO) selection as running mate, citing research that suggests voters prioritize the presidential candidate and their perception of the incumbent government’s performance over the running mate.

Dr. Kennedy congratulated NAPO on his selection but emphasized that the outcome of the election depends on Ghanaians’ evaluation of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and their desire for continuity or change.
He believes that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, is currently in a strong position to win, due to widespread dissatisfaction with the Akufo-Addo government’s performance.
However, Dr. Kennedy also noted that Alan Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change, could be a game-changer in the election.
He observed that Ghanaians tend to vote out incumbent parties every eight years, which could work against the NPP.
While Dr. Kennedy thinks the NDC has a historical advantage, he believes Alan’s candidacy could force a second round and make the election more interesting.
Dr. Kennedy’s comments suggest that the 2024 election will be closely contested, with several factors at play. His insights provide valuable food for thought as Ghanaians prepare to head to the polls.
