There are reports from the Democratic Republic of Congo that at least 20 civilians, including women and children have been killed with machetes during an overnight attack in the north-east of the country.

A local official in Djugu, in Ituri province, said 17 people had also been injured and were being treated in hospital.

There have been frequent attacks in the area by a militia known as Codeco, which is made up of people from the Lendu ethnic group.
