Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing it of prioritising political power over the welfare of Ghanaians.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, Dr. Boamah took aim at the party’s decision to schedule its presidential primaries earlier than usual ahead of the 2028 general elections. The decision was made at a National Executive Committee meeting held in Accra on Tuesday, June 17.

According to Dr. Boamah, the NPP has demonstrated no remorse for the economic and social hardships Ghanaians endured under its administration.

“The Competent Economic Management Team did enough damage to pensioners, people with disabilities, women, the youth, and Ghanaians in general,” he wrote.

“In six short months, instead of apologising sincerely for their misdeeds, they’re focusing on the next elections.”

He further accused the NPP of maintaining a pattern of self-interest over national progress.

“NPP thinks only about themselves and the next elections,” he added, ending his post with: “The Alternative Is…” — a phrase tied to the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) message of people-centred governance.

Meanwhile, Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, has defended the decision, saying it is meant to give the party’s eventual flagbearer ample time to engage key constituencies and build momentum ahead of 2028.

Haruna said the party’s new primary date — January 31, 2026 — aligns with recommendations from its constitutional review process.

“It is going to market the candidate enough with regards to us being able to get a contact in the international community, the business community, and the various stakeholders across the length and breadth of the world,” he said.

He added that the early primaries will help the party shift focus from internal matters to national mobilisation — particularly important given the NPP’s current minority status in Parliament.
