Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, has concluded a nationwide tour of all 276 constituencies ahead of the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
The tour comes just months after NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, which ended the party’s eight-year tenure in government. In response, the party’s National Council adopted an early reorganisation plan, beginning with the election of a flagbearer.
Dr. Bawumia launched his campaign, dubbed “Our Journey Together,” on October 15, 2025, in Sene East in the Bono East Region. The tour spanned the entire country, with intermittent breaks for official and public engagements.
According to his campaign team, the objective was to engage party members at the grassroots, solicit feedback, and discuss strategies for revitalising the party following the 2024 elections.
During his nationwide engagements, Dr. Bawumia referenced the party’s electoral performance, noting a decline of over two million votes compared to the 2020 elections.
He attributed the outcome primarily to economic challenges and voter dissatisfaction, urging party members to avoid internal divisions.
“Unity, improved organisation, and collective responsibility are key as we prepare for future elections,” he said.
A major theme of the campaign was the welfare of grassroots members. Dr. Bawumia held meetings with constituency executives, polling station officers, electoral area coordinators, and party activists, outlining proposals to improve engagement and recognition at the constituency level.
This included regular interactions between national leadership and grassroots members, as well as measures to acknowledge the contributions of party workers.
The campaign was conducted under guidelines emphasising decorum and respect among aspirants. Dr. Bawumia consistently encouraged supporters to focus on policy ideas, experience, and party cohesion, stressing the importance of internal unity ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Throughout the tour, he highlighted his political career, including his involvement with the NPP since 2008, his role during opposition years, participation in the 2012 election petition, and tenure as Vice President from 2017 to 2025.
He also cited initiatives associated with his time in office, such as the Ghana Card, Mobile Money Interoperability, and the Zipline medical drone delivery programme.
The campaign received public endorsements from party executives, Members of Parliament, grassroots organisers, and former officials across several regions, including Ashanti, Greater Accra, Eastern, Western, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, Northern, and Oti.
Dr. Bawumia concluded the tour in the Ashanti Region, thanking party members for their participation and urging delegates to conduct themselves peacefully during the primaries. He pledged that efforts would be made to unify the party after the internal election and refocus on preparations for the 2028 polls.
The NPP presidential primaries are set for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
