In an interview on 3 FM on June 27, 2024, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), expressed concerns about the party’s selection process for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate in the upcoming 2024 elections.

He argued that Bawumia was not given the autonomy to choose his own running mate, citing the self-interest of certain party leaders as the reason.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe pointed out that this decision deviates from the party’s historical precedent, where previous presidential candidates, such as Kufour, Atta Mills, Mahama, and Akufo-Addo, were allowed to select their own running mates.

He questioned why Bawumia was not afforded the same opportunity, suggesting that internal party dynamics and personal interests are at play.

While acknowledging Bawumia’s pleasant demeanor, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe emphasized that being a good politician requires more than just being a nice person.

He reiterated his earlier prediction that Bawumia would not be given the freedom to choose his own running mate, citing the interests of certain party members.

The announcement of Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the NPP’s running mate for the 2024 elections has confirmed Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe’s concerns.
