The pre-tertiary teacher unions in the Eastern Region have issued an ultimatum to the government, demanding immediate payment of outstanding allowances by May 13, 2024, to avoid industrial action.

The unions, comprising GNAT, NAGRAT, and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana, are dissatisfied with the government’s failure to implement agreed-upon allowances since 2009 and 2020.

Addressing the media in Koforidua, the unions highlighted the government’s neglect of teachers’ welfare, including the deprived area allowance, extra assessment allowance, book/data/online teaching support allowance, and the upward adjustment of the continuous professional development (CPD) allowance.

They emphasized the harsh economic conditions faced by teachers and the government’s inaction, making the last 24 months particularly challenging for Ghanaian teachers.

The unions warned that if their demands are not met by May 13, 2024, they will take further action, stressing that they have had enough of the government’s nonchalance and complacency.

They expressed solidarity with their colleagues in the Volta Region, who participated in a peaceful demonstration on May 3, calling for the payment of deprived area allowances and other key allowances.

The demonstration in Ho included members of GNAT, NAGRAT, and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana, who marched through the principal streets and presented a petition to the Regional Coordinating Director, Augustus Awity, at the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC).
