The Eastern Regional Police Command has appealed to MTN Ghana to urgently improve network connectivity along key areas in the region, particularly the Adukrom-Aseseeso, Aseseeso-Somanya stretch, and the Donkorkrom enclave, to aid in the fight against armed robbery.
According to the police, criminals have been exploiting poor mobile network coverage in these areas to ambush unsuspecting commuters and residents, often robbing them of their valuables and, in some cases, inflicting serious injuries.
Speaking at the 2025 Stakeholders Forum in Koforidua, Eastern Regional Operations Commander, ASP Agyare Kofi Okyere, stressed the importance of resolving the network challenges to enhance the police’s operational response.
“The Adukrom-Aseseeso stretch has a poor connection, and criminals are taking advantage of both the bad roads and weak network coverage to strike,” he said.
Deputy Eastern Regional Police Commander, ACP Richard Appiah, also addressed the growing trend of attacks on mobile money (MoMo) vendors in the region.
He said the command is actively engaging vendors on safety protocols and encouraging them to prioritize personal security.
“MoMo vendor attacks remain a major concern. We’re advising them not to count money openly and to operate from secure cages. Most importantly, they must have emergency contact numbers of the police handy so they can report suspicious activity immediately,” he noted.
The police believe improved communication infrastructure, combined with vendor cooperation and community vigilance, will significantly reduce the incidence of robberies in the region.
