The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has disqualified Philip Appiah Kubi, the Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) replacement flagbearer, due to errors and illegalities found on his nomination form.

Jean Mensa, the EC Chair, made the announcement at a press conference on Tuesday, November 12.

Despite allowing the GFP to correct some discrepancies, Mensa stated that certain irregularities were too significant to overlook, leading to Kubi’s disqualification from contesting in the upcoming 2024 elections.

The GFP had been dealt a major blow by the death of its founding leader and original flagbearer, Akua Donkor, on October 15. This left the party scrambling to find a replacement.

The EC had granted them a 10-day window to submit a new nomination, resulting in Kubi’s appointment.

However, during the EC’s review, several issues with Kubi’s documentation were identified, going beyond simple clerical errors.

While some corrections were made by the party, the EC deemed other elements “illegitimate” and incompatible with electoral laws.

Jean Mensa emphasized that the EC is committed to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process, and as such, no irregularities, regardless of attempts at rectification, can be accepted.
