Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) is poised to introduce a bill in Parliament that would make the Ghana Card, the national identification card, the exclusive document for identifying citizens during voter registration.
This development was revealed by EC Chairperson Jean Mensa in an interview with Graphic Online on May 29, 2024, following an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting in Accra.

According to Jean Mensa, the EC has garnered the unanimous support of all political parties, paving the way for the legislative process.
The bill is expected to be presented during the next parliamentary session. “The IPAC meeting extensively discussed the Ghana Card issue, and the consensus was for the EC to proceed with laying the bill that would make the Ghana Card the sole identification document for citizens,” she explained.
