Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and Chairman of the Ghana Police Council, has expressed his confidence in the professionalism of the Ghana Police Service as the nation prepares for the 2024 general elections.

During a commissioning ceremony for 430 newly promoted officers to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) at the National Police Training School in Accra on October 30, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the critical role the police play in upholding democracy and maintaining public trust.
He commended the police for their commitment to managing previous elections, acknowledging their significant contributions to preserving peace and stability.
However, he cautioned the service against complacency and urged them to bolster their efforts in light of current security challenges and heightened political tensions.
“Every election presents its unique challenges. However, we are confident in the professionalism of the police. Officers must act responsibly, as the police are always central to elections in Ghana,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia noted that the neutral, fair, and firm policing seen in past elections should inspire optimism. He also praised the police for their commendable conduct during the recent voter registration and exhibition exercise, describing it as a valuable blueprint for the upcoming elections.
“The Ghana Police Service has successfully navigated these challenges before, and we are counting on you to maintain high professional standards in executing your duties. You are setting the tone for a peaceful and incident-free election,” he added.
Additionally, the Vice President highlighted the government’s ongoing investments in police training, logistics, and equipment, underscoring these resources as crucial for enhancing the service’s capacity to effectively manage both electoral security and general law enforcement.
