The Electoral Commission (EC) has expressed concern that fake news and disinformation could significantly disrupt the December 7 general elections, potentially eroding voter confidence and jeopardizing the peaceful conduct of the polls.

To mitigate these risks, the EC has stressed the importance of taking proactive measures to verify information before it is shared with the public.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoo, the Director of Training at the EC, warned that the unchecked spread of misinformation could create confusion among voters, fuel tensions, and damage the credibility of the election process.

In an interview on Tuesday, November 12, Dr. Quaicoo emphasized that the EC is enhancing its communication strategies to ensure that accurate information reaches the public quickly.

He also encouraged voters to rely on verified sources for election-related updates and report any suspicious or unverified information to the appropriate authorities.

“And I said that my greatest fear for Election 2024 is misinformation. Because both the traditional and the social media at times are in a hurry to put forward information without checking the authenticity.

“So I am saying that I am seeing ahead of us where people will come out with some videos that may not even be related to Ghana’s election.”
