Former Nigerian President and leader of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF), Goodluck Jonathan, has expressed strong confidence in the capabilities of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) as the country approaches its December 7, 2024, general elections.

After engaging in high-level meetings with key stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission and the Ghana Police Service, Goodluck Jonathan commended the preparedness of these institutions, emphasizing their critical roles in ensuring the success of the electoral process.
He stressed that both the electoral management body and security services are essential for a smooth and credible election. Reflecting on his discussions with the Inspector General of Police and the EC team, he praised their passion, commitment, and progress so far in preparing for the elections.
“For elections to succeed, two institutions are crucial: the electoral management body and security. We had a robust discussion with the EC and police, and based on what we’ve seen, we have no doubt about their competence and readiness to conduct a successful election in December.”
Goodluck Jonathan also highlighted Ghana’s esteemed democratic reputation in Africa, stating, “Ghana is rated highly in democratic practice.
While there are challenges, I believe the upcoming election will further elevate Ghana’s standing. You will not disappoint West Africa or Africa, especially the young generation.”
Jean Mensa, the Electoral Commissioner, reassured the public of the EC’s full readiness to conduct a credible, transparent, and peaceful election, noting that the commission’s recent actions have demonstrated their commitment to these goals.
