The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has unveiled his vision to make Ghana’s ports among the most competitive globally.

His strategy includes introducing a flat import duty rate system and aligning port duties with those of neighboring Togo or even reducing them to improve predictability and reduce smuggling.

During a stakeholder engagement in the Tema Central Constituency, Dr. Bawumia highlighted that a specialized team has been formed to ensure all relevant charges are included in the proposed flat duty system.

“So, next year, I’m going to give a tax amnesty to all businesses. They’re all individuals.

So, we don’t have any problems with GRA and everything. We will all start from a clean slate with a new tax system that everybody can understand and we can calculate. So, again, we want to change the duty system at the port.

“So, as we speak, I have a team working and trying to put these things together and I know that they will contact all of you.

Because the best way to operationalise things is to talk to the people who are working with these things and this is what I want to do,” he stated.
