The Pharmacy Council in Accra recently hosted an induction ceremony for 364 newly qualified pharmacists, emphasizing the importance of embracing digital technology and rural service in their practice. The event’s theme, “Universal Health Coverage: Embracing Digital Frontiers,” highlighted the need for pharmacists to leverage technology to improve healthcare access and quality.

Minister of Health Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, represented by Deputy Minister Alexander Akwasi Acquah, delivered a keynote address encouraging pharmacists to remain in Ghana and utilize digital tools to enhance their services.

He acknowledged the temptation to seek opportunities abroad but emphasized the need for healthcare professionals to adopt digital technology to bridge the gap in pharmaceutical care in deprived areas.

The minister assured the inductees of government support and encouraged them to aim for high-quality care while building their personal and collective capacities to improve operational efficiency.

He also cautioned them to maintain focus and resist the temptation to overindulge in the social aspects of digitalization at the expense of their patients and profession.

Former Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana President Thomas Boateng Appiagyei stressed the importance of critical thinking in embracing digital frontiers, urging the newly qualified pharmacists to employ creative thinking to develop innovative technology-driven solutions.

Acting Registrar Dr. Daniel Amaning Danquah congratulated the inductees and encouraged them to adhere to the “Apothecary’s Oath,” upholding the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, and patient care.

The ceremony also saw the presentation of awards to outstanding pharmacists, including Dr. Kate Coleman-Sarfo, Dr. Nana Yaw Wireko-Ampong, and Dr. Michael Opoku Fordjour, recognizing their contributions to the healthcare system.
