Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, Chairman of the Energy Committee in Parliament, has clarified that the recent 50% budget reduction for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) was not a decision made by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor.

The clarification came after the Minister’s statement during a Parliamentary briefing that ECG’s budget, initially set at GH₵500 million, was slashed to GH₵250 million.
In an interview with Channel One Newsroom on Friday, March 28, Bedzrah, also the Member of Parliament for Ho West, explained that the budget cut was a decision made by the Ministry of Finance, not the Ministry of Energy. He added that the reduction was part of the Ministry of Finance’s broader fiscal adjustments aimed at managing the country’s financial challenges.
He further noted that only the Petroleum Commission and the Petroleum Hub had received budget increases, while other institutions faced a 50% reduction.
“The Petroleum Commission and Petroleum Hub were the only institutions that have seen a rise in their budget. The rest have been slashed by 50%, and we thought that the Minister of Finance should rather look at it. So it is not from the minister who has brought it down, but rather it is from the Ministry of Finance,” he stated.
