The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, has urged the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to prioritize the security of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) papers, treating it as a matter of national security.

She emphasized that leaks and subsequent cancellations of exam papers are demoralizing for students who have put in extensive hours of study.

Speaking to Citi News after the Impacting the Next Generation Foundation organized a seminar ahead of the BECE starting on July 8, 2024, she remarked that if there were an alternative to WAEC offering better exam security, many Ghanaians would support it to avoid the annual issue of exam leaks.

“My simple advice to WAEC is to treat exam security as a national security issue. It is disheartening when exam papers leak and are canceled, especially after students have spent hours preparing.

WAEC must address these frequent security breaches. Ghanaians should be able to say there were no leaks this time and everything went smoothly.

If another organization offers better examination security, Ghanaians might prefer that option. This cannot continue; there are too many risks surrounding exams these days,” she stated.
