The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has assured that the Police Service prioritizes media freedom and the protection of journalists.

Dr. Dampare stated that the Police Service has implemented strict internal disciplinary measures to prevent any abuse of media practitioners by officers.

Speaking at a media safety dialogue on August 29, 2024, he emphasized that, as a member of the media community himself, ensuring the safety of journalists is a personal priority.

“We do not take the protection of journalists and media freedom for granted.

We have reinforced our internal disciplinary procedures to ensure that any officer who breaches these expectations will be punished, serving as a deterrent to others,” he said.

The IGP also highlighted the collaborative relationship between the Police and the media, noting that both serve the public and share a common goal of serving the people.

He acknowledged that while mistakes may happen, it is crucial to recognize and address them with apologies when necessary.
