Fifty percent of the food we consume in Accra unsafe – Accra Metropolitan Assembly

A spokesperson for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly has stated that there is a fifty-fifty chance that the food consumers consume in Accra is unsafe.

Speaking in a media interview, the Accra Metropolitan Public Health Director, Madam Florence Kuukyi stated that most restaurant owners and food sellers produce foods that are below the standards required for healthy living.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly, whiles observing the month of June, as Food Safety Month, is embarking on a campaign to improve food standards in the metropolis, hence the theme ‘Food Standards Save Lives’.

She stated that ‘’globally, 1.6 million people contract food-borne diseases, and about 420, 000 people die annually from food-related diseases’’, hence there is a need for everybody, including growers, retailers, restaurant owners, and consumers, to play their part in holistic food safety to consume.

She advised consumers to avoid buying food items that are placed on the ground and inspect food items before they purchase them for use.
