Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has commended the John Dramani Mahama-led administration for what he describes as notable improvements in Ghana’s key economic indicators, while cautioning that the gains have yet to meaningfully impact job creation.

Speaking ahead of the 2026 State of the Nation Address on Thursday, February 27, Boadu offered an assessment of the country’s current economic trajectory.

While acknowledging visible signs of macroeconomic stability, he stressed that the ultimate test of economic recovery lies in its ability to generate employment and improve livelihoods.

His comments come at a time when government officials have highlighted improvements in inflation trends, currency stability, and fiscal consolidation as evidence that the economy is gradually rebounding.

According to Boadu, several economic indicators suggest that Ghana is moving toward stability.

However, he emphasised that these gains must translate into real opportunities for citizens, particularly the youth.

“In terms of economic indicators, many of them are pointing in the right direction, only that they are not connecting to productivity that will create employment for our people.

“You clearly will see that as a result of the strengthening of the Cedi, there is an effect on our local production for export, and that is why you are seeing the challenges in the cocoa, maize, and cashew farmers.

“There is a need to recalibrate what we want as a people. If it is about wanting an import-led economy, it will obviously hurt employment and jobs, and that is what we are seeing now.”
