Choguel Maïga, the former Prime Minister of Mali, is facing accusations of embezzlement by the body responsible for overseeing public spending. A report from the authority reveals multiple instances of misappropriation involving substantial sums of money.

The auditor’s report highlights “undue expenditure on staff” from 2020 to 2023, including nearly €20,000 spent on phone subscriptions and the diversion of equipment intended for schools, such as WiFi and computers.

Maïga, who served as Prime Minister from June 2021 until his dismissal in November 2024 by junta leader Col. Assimi Goïta, is also accused of covering up some of the incidents or benefiting from them. His dismissal followed growing criticism of the junta’s lack of transparency regarding the transition to democracy.

He has so far refused to comment on the embezzlement allegations.

Maiga has previously commented on the report when the auditor began its research, insisting that he had a ‘clear conscience’.
