The Ministry of Transport has announced the reinstatement of staff members from the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) who were implicated in a recent cocaine smuggling incident at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

This decision follows a report by the Herald newspaper, which revealed that a significant quantity of illegal drugs was seized at Brussels Airport in Belgium.

These drugs are suspected to have been smuggled through KIA on a Royal Air Maroc flight on March 23, 2024, allegedly with the assistance of a GACL employee.

The report named the suspect as Bianca Proeger Delgey, a Dutch national, who was arrested at Brussels Airport with 8.5 kilograms of what is believed to be cocaine, reportedly transported via KIA on that date.

After the drugs were intercepted in Brussels, GACL placed the implicated staff members on suspension.

In an update during a session of the Government Assurances Committee in Parliament, Minister of Transport Kwaku Ofori Asiamah stated that the staff have been cleared of wrongdoing.

“This matter has been managed internally, and considering the procedures we followed, it has been handled appropriately. As far as I’m concerned, the issue has been satisfactorily resolved,” he stated.

He also mentioned the government’s plans to regulate the cost of domestic flights if discussions with relevant stakeholders do not address the current high prices.
