The Ghana Armed Forces has announced that the government will commence payment of gratuity arrears to retired military personnel following the approval and implementation of Constitutional Instrument (CI) 129.
In a press release issued by the Department of Public Relations on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, the military said the government “has approved and will commence payment of gratuity arrears for all retired military personnel under the implementation of Constitutional Instrument (CI) 129.”
The statement explained that upon assumption of office, the current Military High Command initiated engagements with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Defence to resolve what it described as a “5-year long-standing impasse over the gratuity formula under CI 129.”
It noted that the consultations have resulted in “a clear two-year phased implementation roadmap.”
According to the release, all personnel who retired from November 2020 will receive arrears based on the new gratuity formula.
Payments are expected to be made in four instalments between February 2026 and December 2027, with the first tranche scheduled to be released by close of business on Friday, 27 February 2026.
“A total of 238 officers and 2,155 soldiers will benefit,” the statement said, adding that “all future retirements will be processed fully in line with CI 129.”
The Armed Forces said the development “brings closure to a matter that had remained unresolved since 2020” and ensures that affected personnel and those who will retire subsequently “receive their full entitlements at the correct rate.”
The Military High Command also expressed appreciation to the government for supporting the resolution.
