The government has reiterated its commitment to addressing the illegal mining crisis, commonly known as galamsey, by ramping up efforts under “Operation Halt.” This operation, led by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), aims to eliminate illegal small-scale mining activities that are damaging the country’s water bodies and natural resources.

In an unprecedented move, the new phase of “Operation Halt” will involve collaboration with the Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana.

In a statement on Wednesday, October 9, the Information Minister emphasized that this initiative reflects a strategic shift by the government to include legitimate small-scale miners in efforts to combat illegal operators who are polluting rivers and destroying forests.

This collaboration comes at a critical juncture as the country prepares for a nationwide strike organized by Labour, set to begin on Thursday, October 10, 2024.

This strike is partially driven by perceptions of the government’s inaction regarding galamsey, intensifying the need for effective measures to tackle the illegal practice.

The Ministry of Information, in a press release signed by Minister Fatimatu Abubakar, stated that river bodies and forest reserves have been designated as Red Zones, where all mining activities, whether legal or illegal, will be prohibited.

The government has called upon all stakeholders, including civil society, the media, and the public, to unite in the fight against illegal small-scale mining to safeguard the environment for future generations.

This announcement is particularly significant given the ongoing public discontent surrounding the galamsey issue, which has been exacerbated by the impending nationwide strike.

Organised Labour, representing various unions such as the Public Utility Workers Union and the General Agricultural Workers Union, is demanding more decisive government action against galamsey, including a declaration of a state of emergency to address the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining.

As the strike threatens to disrupt multiple sectors, the government faces increased pressure to demonstrate tangible progress in its fight against illegal mining.
