Ghana’s environmental crisis, exacerbated by rampant illegal mining, has prompted the Minority in Parliament to demand a national address from President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The devastating effects of galamsey, including the destruction of water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves, have sparked widespread concern.

In a statement issued on September 15, 2024, Alhassan Suhuyini, Ranking Member on the Lands and Natural Resources Committee, emphasized the need for a comprehensive presidential address to outline strategies to combat the crisis.

The Minority stresses that the president’s speech should include actionable solutions, involving all stakeholders, to tackle the environmental damage and livelihood threats caused by galamsey.

Despite initial promises, the situation has deteriorated, with high-profile individuals implicated in illegal mining activities.

The Minority warns of severe consequences, including food insecurity and health hazards, if immediate measures are not taken.

They urge the president to propose solutions that engage local communities, law enforcement, and civil society to address the critical level of damage caused by galamsey.
