The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has urged Organised Labour to disregard President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s appeal for more time to combat the illegal mining (galamsey) crisis in the country.

In a statement released on Monday, the PPP emphasized that the President has been in power for nearly eight years and has failed to effectively address the issue of illegal mining.

The party claimed that his calls for more time are merely an attempt to allow his party members to continue committing this and other serious offenses against the people.

As a result, the PPP has strongly backed Organised Labour’s decision to declare a nationwide strike, pressing the government to declare a State of Emergency to address the galamsey menace.

“The party is also in full support of the demands made by the TUC for the government to ban all forms of illegal small-scale mining in our water bodies, forest reserves and within any part of Ghana.”

“We consider galamsey as the single most existential threat to the Republic of Ghana. The galamseyers are engaged in biological warfare against the State of Ghana, and their use of mercury and other heavy-metal pollutants constitute a deployment of weapons of mass destruction against the nation-state and its people,” it stated.
