The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, in partnership with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious in Ghana and the Catholic Lay Faithful and Professionals, has announced an Environmental Prayer Protest Walk Against Galamsey scheduled for Friday, October 11, 2024.

This initiative aims to showcase their opposition to the destructive impacts of galamsey (illegal mining) in Ghana and to call for immediate government action to protect the environment.

In a press release dated October 4, the organization outlined its specific objectives, which include raising awareness about the harmful effects of galamsey, urging the government to declare a state of emergency to halt all mining activities near water bodies, river buffers, and forest reserves to facilitate land restoration, mobilizing Catholics and Ghanaians to demand urgent action, promoting environmental sustainability, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders to address the issue.

This announcement from the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra follows recent demonstrations by groups such as Democracy Hub and Concerned Citizens, as well as a potential strike by Organized Labour.
