There was a heated debate in Parliament on September 3, 2024, regarding the issue of galamsey.

During the extraordinary session, Majority and Minority Members of Parliament traded blame over the deteriorating state of the country’s water bodies.

The Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, specifically accused the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of causing more environmental damage than the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

“If we were to investigate both sides of the House (NPP and NDC), I can confidently say that the NDC polluted the water more than we did. So, let’s set the record straight,” he stated.

The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, responded by acknowledging that while security personnel were deployed to combat galamsey during his party’s tenure, the practice has persisted.

Other Members of Parliament raised concerns about the growing water scarcity across the country.

The MP for Bodi, Samson Ahi, highlighted that areas such as Kumasi, the Western Region, and Accra are experiencing significant water shortages.

” If care is not taken, we may not get water to bath before coming to Parliament tomorrow,’’ he warned.
