Ghana is bracing for a nationwide strike beginning Thursday, October 10, 2024, as the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) of TUC-Ghana has instructed its members to stay home in protest.
The strike is a response to the government’s perceived lack of action against illegal mining, locally known as galamsey.

GAWU’s decision to join the strike follows an unproductive meeting with President Akufo-Addo on October 3, 2024, which failed to yield a resolution.
As President Akufo-Addo was unable to convince Organised Labour to reconsider their planned strike, more unions, including GAWU, have aligned with the movement.
This strike is part of a broader campaign by Organised Labour, aimed at pressuring the government to take stronger, decisive action against the ongoing environmental destruction caused by galamsey.
The unions are advocating for a state of emergency to be declared to combat the illegal mining crisis.
“We therefore call on management to support this course as all workers are directed to stay off work with effect from Thursday 10th October 2024 until the government accede to our demands.”
