George Afriyie has responded to charges brought by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) over comments he made regarding match-fixing in the nation’s top-tier football league.

Afriyie clarified that his statements were misunderstood and taken out of context.

In a detailed submission, Afriyie defended his position, pointing out that similar remarks by other football officials had not resulted in disciplinary actions.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges, asserting that his comments did not constitute improper conduct.

The GFA charged Afriyie on November 7 after he referenced match-fixing incidents involving AshantiGold and Inter Allies during an interview on Kessben TV, suggesting manipulation in the Ghana Premier League.

The GFA argued that his remarks could tarnish the league’s reputation and cited section 11(2)(d) of the 2019 GFA Disciplinary Code, which prohibits actions that bring the association into disrepute.

The GFA’s Disciplinary Committee will now review his response before determining whether his statements violate the code.

Afriyie had referred to a match that led to the relegation of Inter Allies and the suspension of AshantiGold, alongside sanctions on club officials, including former president Dr. Kwaku Frimpong.

Afriyie, who ran unsuccessfully for the GFA presidency in 2019 and was disqualified from standing in 2023, was second to Kurt Okraku in the 2019 election, where Okraku secured a second term unopposed.
