Germany won the bronze medal in Olympic women’s football at Paris 2024 with a 1-0 win over world champions Spain on Friday.

Spain had their best chance in the first half when Aitana Bonmati hit the post just before halftime.

The decisive goal came from Giulia Gwinn, who scored a penalty in the 65th minute after being fouled by Spain’s goalkeeper, Cata Coll.

Spain was awarded a penalty just before the final whistle, but Alexia Putellas’ shot was saved by German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.

Despite dominating possession and creating several chances late in the game, Spain couldn’t find an equalizer.

This win gives Germany its fourth bronze medal in Olympic women’s football, following previous victories in 2000, 2004, and 2008. Spain, making their Olympic debut, missed several opportunities.

The gold medal match between Brazil and the United States will be held on Saturday at Parc des Princes.
