GES – 490,000 Qualify for free SHS

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that an estimated 490,000 students have qualified for Free Senior High School, which is in its third year of implementation.

They will be allocated senior high schools (SHS) through the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).
They qualified out of the 514,215 students whose results have been released to the GES by the West African Examination Council (WAEC).
Director-General of GES, Prof Kwasi Opoku Amankwa announced this at an education stakeholders’ meeting.
Candidates can check placement on September
He said students and parents can find out their schools when the online portal for students’ placement is opened Sunday, September 8.
cssps.gov.gh or cssps.org to check placement
He provided two websites – cssps.gov.gh or cssps.org – where students can find out their schools after purchasing a voucher at outlets across the country.
Call centre set up to address problems
The GES Director-General announced that a call centre has been set up to address problems associated with the placements. The centre, he said, would be opened Monday, September 9.

GH₵195m to cover first-term bill for SHS students
Prof Amankwa also announced that government has also set aside approximately GH₵195m to cover the first-term bill for SHS students.

GH₵61m feeding fee released 
Providing a breakdown of the allocation, the GES Director-General said GH₵61 million, which is 20% of feeding amount for third-year students, has been released. 
GH₵14m for purchase of perishable foods to be disbursed next week
According to him, a further GH₵14 million is expected to be disbursed next week to take care of purchase of perishable foods.
GH₵85m to pay fees of second-year students
Another GH₵85m has been earmarked to pay the fees of second-year students.
GH₵95m to pay fees of fresh students
In addition, GH₵95 million has been set aside to pay the fees of fresh students in first year. These monies, he said, will be disbursed next week.
721 Senior high schools
Total number of senior high schools for the placements is 721.
10 Regions to get resolution centres
GES has established resolution centres in 10 regional capitals, excluding capitals of the newly created regions.

The ministry is also developing infographics to help parents and students.
The September re-opening marks the third year of the Free SHS policy under the Nana Akufo-Addo government.
The government has footed the bill of every single student in senior high school, making it the most expensive educational policy in Ghana.
