To enhance youth development in Ghanaian football, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has introduced a new mandate requiring U-19 players to be included in matchday squads across all divisions.

Announced by GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku during the 30th Ordinary Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence, this directive will take effect in the upcoming season.

Premier League clubs will need to feature at least four U-19 players in their matchday squads, with two starting the game.

Division One League clubs are required to include six U-19 players, with three starting each match.

Division Two clubs must have eight U-19 players in their squads, with four starting.

President Simeon-Okraku highlighted that this measure is part of a broader effort to improve football quality in Ghana through youth development.

“Our future success in football depends on how well we develop and support young talent.

By giving them exposure at a competitive level, we strengthen our teams and secure the future of our national squads,” he said.

This initiative aims to reshape matchday squad structures, encouraging clubs to adapt their strategies and invest in youth development.

The GFA will oversee the implementation and impact of these new rules, which are part of ongoing reforms to fortify Ghanaian football’s foundation and future success.
