Akua Donkor, founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) and a notable figure in Ghanaian politics, has passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra.

Her passing was confirmed by a family member to Accra-based Citi FM on Tuesday, October 29, noting that she passed on Monday, October 28.
Though details of her death remain unclear, Akua Donkor was widely known for her vibrant and outspoken personality, leaving a lasting legacy in Ghanaian politics, especially as an advocate for farmers and women’s rights.
Her political journey began with founding the Ghana Freedom Party, through which she championed grassroots causes.
Despite facing limited resources and significant political challenges, Akua Donkor became a memorable figure in Ghana’s electoral history with multiple presidential bids.
She attempted the presidency twice, with her latest effort placing her as the third candidate on the 2024 presidential ballot. Her passing signifies the end of a unique chapter in Ghanaian politics.
Her presidential aspirations began when she was elected as the Assemblywoman for Herman.
She first sought the presidency in 2012 as an independent candidate, though she was disqualified by the Electoral Commission for not meeting eligibility requirements.
While she disagreed with the decision, she chose not to pursue legal action and instead endorsed Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).
In 2016, she faced disqualification again after the Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) headquarters in Kabu, Eastern Region, was severely damaged by fire in early January.
