The workers of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) have announced a nationwide strike scheduled to begin on November 12, 2024, in protest against the newly enacted National Roads Authority (NRA) Act 2024 (Act 1118).

The indefinite strike is in response to the law, which mandates the merger of the GHA with the Department of Urban Roads (DUR) and the Department of Feeder Roads (DFR). Workers argue that this move could undermine the autonomy and efficiency of the road sector.
GHA representatives explained that the decision to go on strike is a last resort after ongoing frustrations over the lack of consultation with employees regarding the NRA Act.
The union contends that the merger could result in operational inefficiencies and potential job losses.
In their statement, the workers issued a firm ultimatum with two key demands: the immediate removal of I.K. Mensah, the Board Chairman of the authority, and the retirement of Chief Executive Collins B. Donkor, within seven working days.
They hold these two individuals accountable for the failure to involve GHA workers in the drafting and finalization of the NRA Bill 2023, as well as their endorsement of an Act that, according to the workers, fails to prioritize the interests of employees and the operational effectiveness of the road sector.
Furthermore, the workers are demanding the complete revocation of the NRA Act within 14 days, citing widespread opposition to the law among stakeholders who believe it could undermine the governance structures of the road sector.
