The Ghana Education Service (GES) has strongly condemned acts of violence and sexual abuse reported during the Super Zonal Sports Competition held in the Eastern Region from February 4 to 6, 2026.
In a statement dated February 11, and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, GES said it had received reports of “serious misconducts involving students,” including a stabbing incident and an alleged gang-rape.
“Management condemns these acts in the strongest terms and emphasises that such behaviour has no place within the Ghana Education Service. Inter-school sports remain an important co-curricular activity aimed at nurturing talent, promoting discipline, teamwork, and unity among students.
“It is therefore unacceptable for such events, or activities connected to them, to be associated with violence, sexual abuse, or any form of criminal conduct,” the statement read.
According to the statement, preliminary reports indicate that a student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School was stabbed about 200 metres away from the competition venue after leaving to have lunch with a friend. GES said the victim was allegedly attacked by students of New Juaben Senior High School.
The Service also reported that a female student of Osino Senior High School was allegedly raped in a bush some distance away from the competition grounds.
In connection with the alleged rape, GES disclosed that two students have been arrested and are currently in police custody assisting investigations. A third suspect, described as the alleged ringleader and an old student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School, is currently on the run.
“The victim has received medical attention and has since been discharged from the hospital. She is being provided with counselling and psychosocial support by the Regional Guidance and Counselling Coordinator, the Head of the Girls’ Education Unit, and officers of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU).”
On the stabbing case, the service noted that the injured student has also been treated and discharged. One suspect has been arrested and is assisting police with investigations.
The Ghana Education Service assured that it is treating the incidents with “utmost seriousness,” adding that all persons found culpable will be taken through due process in line with its Code of Conduct on student behaviour.
GES further directed the Regional Director of Education to apply appropriate sanctions to the schools involved, as a deterrent to others.
