On Friday, June 14, 2024, in Accra, Ghana Football Association President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku led a high-ranking delegation to bid farewell to Roy Ricky Romeo, the former physical trainer of the Black Stars, who passed away.
The funeral service, held at LightHouse Chapel, Teshie Lascala, was attended by a large contingent from the Ghana Football Association, with President Simeon-Okraku delivering a heartfelt tribute to the late physical trainer.

Roy Romeo’s contributions to the Black Stars and Ghanaian football were highlighted, with the President praising his technical expertise, dedication, and tireless work ethic.
The President eulogized Roy, saying, “We’ve lost a dynamic, intelligent, and hardworking individual who served Ghanaian football with unwavering dedication. His contributions to the Black Stars have left an indelible mark, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.”
The GFA delegation included Vice-President Mark Addo, Executive Council members Samuel Aboabire, Nana Sarfo Oduro, and Gideon Fosu, as well as Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey and the senior national team’s backroom staff.
Other notable attendees included General Secretary of the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana Anthony Baffoe, Chief of Staff Michael Osekre, Director of National Teams Alex Asante, and staff from the GFA and various regional football associations.
The solemn event was a testament to Roy Romeo’s impact on Ghanaian football, and his legacy will be deeply missed.
Roy’s heroic act in 2020, where he saved a player’s life during a Division One League match, was also remembered.
His dedication to the sport was evident in his work with the Black Stars, including his role in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
