The inaugural Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo Moot Court competition, hosted by GIMPA Law School, began on September 4 with an opening ceremony at the Dr. Daniel McKorley Moot Court Room on the Green Hill Campus.
This national moot court event gathers leading law faculties from across Ghana to vie for the esteemed title of the country’s top advocates.
Running until September 6, the competition is centered around the theme “Ethics, Compliance, and Accountability:
A Holistic Approach to Adjudication” and features teams from GIMPA, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA), the University of Cape Coast (UCC), and Kings University College
Participants in the competition must deliver persuasive arguments in simulated court hearings on complex legal issues, showcasing their research on case law and legal principles.
During the opening ceremony, Chief State Attorney Aduamah Lartey, representing Deputy Attorney General Diana Asonaba Dapaah, emphasized the significance of ethics in legal practice.
“Ethics in adjudication involves more than just adhering to rules; it requires embracing fairness, honesty, and integrity. Our decisions impact society profoundly, and we must administer justice impartially,” she remarked, urging participants to value these principles in their future careers.
Dr. Kwaku Agyeman-Budu, Dean of GIMPA Law School and Acting Rector of GIMPA, highlighted the competition’s goal of instilling ethical responsibility in future legal professionals.
“The Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo Moot Court Competition exemplifies GIMPA’s dedication to advancing legal scholarship, promoting professional integrity, and shaping the future of legal advocacy both in Ghana and beyond,” he stated.
The competition aims to enhance participants’ legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills while providing a valuable networking opportunity with the legal community. It seeks to integrate law students into real-world legal practice and holds promise for the future of legal advocacy in Ghana.
