The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has urgently urged the police service to arrest the Member of Parliament (MP) for Yendi in the Northern Region.

Additionally, the association reiterated its dedication to collaborating closely with the police to ensure that justice is served regarding the recent assault on a journalist by the Yendi MP.

Characterizing the attack on Mohammed Aminu Alabira, a reporter of Citi FM, as “shameful” and deserving condemnation from all upright citizens.

The GJA provided details that the reporter was assaulted during coverage of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries in the Yendi constituency of the Northern region.

Mr. Alabira recounted that while carrying out his professional duties on Saturday, January 27, 2024, the MP for Yendi, Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, “physically assaulted him by slapping and kicking him, causing him to fall to the ground.”

He added that some of the MP’s supporters also attacked him, despite the presence of security personnel who eventually intervened to rescue him.

The GJA stressed that the MP should recognize that “our society operates under laws, and such behavior exhibited by him will not be tolerated.”

The Association further cautioned politicians that as the political atmosphere intensifies, it “will not condone any form of violence against journalists from any individual or group.”
