Ghanaian gospel musician Josh Laryea has expressed concern over the growing trend of gospel songs that focus on material success rather than spiritually uplifting messages.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Laryea lamented that the true purpose of gospel music has been overshadowed by songs that emphasize wealth and prosperity.

“I’ve been a victim myself,” Laryea admitted, reflecting on his past when he too focused on prosperity-themed songs to follow the trend.

He acknowledged that it took him a while to realize he was straying from the path, noting how the lyrics of his songs began to shift in focus.

“Looking back now, I have some regrets, but I accept that at the time, I probably didn’t want to be a lone wolf so I followed the trend,” he shared.

Laryea partially blamed pastors for the shift in focus, explaining that many church sermons now prioritize prosperity over spiritual growth, which has influenced the content of gospel music.

He highlighted that gospel songs centered around material success often attract more attention, which is why many artists lean in that direction.

“Yes, we need to be relevant, but not at the expense of our spiritual mandate,” he said.

“It’s time to refocus on the message since we are gradually creating a culture where people believe God’s primary concern should be the state of their bank accounts.”

Josh Laryea, who began his music career in 1992 with the release of his debut song “His Resurrection Power,” is known for tracks such as “Emmre,” “Ajoomi,” “Ngboo,” “Kane,” and “Bisa.”

He has since become an advocate for returning gospel music to its true purpose of spiritual growth and inspiration.
