During a public lecture at the Wisconsin International University College in Accra on April 4, 2024, former President John Dramani Mahama announced his intention to dissolve the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources if re-elected and assuming office in 2025.
He expressed dissatisfaction, pointing out that despite the ministry’s establishment, there has been an increase in filth in the country.

Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stressed the importance of cutting government spending and raised doubts about the ministry’s effectiveness, noting that Ghana seemed more polluted now than before the ministry was established.
He stated, “We will close down the Ministry of Sanitation, firstly to reduce expenditure, and secondly, because I don’t see any utility. Accra, our country, is dirtier now than it was before the establishment of the Ministry of Sanitation.”
Mahama suggested merging various ministries that were not performing well, such as the Aviation and Railways Ministries, into the Transport Ministry.
He emphasized that each assembly must ensure the cleanliness of its district, so they intend to decentralize sanitation to the district level.
